Extended Producer Responsibility: What Bangladesh Electronics Manufacturers Need to Know

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is rapidly becoming the cornerstone of e-waste management policy across Asia. Singapore, South Korea, Japan, India, and the European Union have all implemented mandatory EPR frameworks that require electronics manufacturers and importers to take financial and operational responsibility for their products at end-of-life.

Under EPR, the obligation to manage electronic waste shifts from the consumer and the government to the producer — the company that manufactured or imported the device. Producers must either establish their own take-back infrastructure or participate in a collective Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) that manages collection, recycling, and disposal on their behalf.

Bangladesh is in the process of developing its national e-waste management framework, and EPR provisions are expected to form a central element of incoming regulations. Electronics manufacturers, importers, and retailers operating in Bangladesh who have not yet prepared for EPR compliance risk significant regulatory exposure when mandatory frameworks come into force.

EWaste Prime's EPR Solutions service provides Bangladesh's electronics sector with a complete compliance pathway — from consumer take-back programme design and retailer return scheme management, to manufacturer compliance documentation, collective PRO operational support, and full EPR reporting packages.

Research from Brunei Darussalam (published in Technium Sustainability, 2024) identified the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme as among the most effective government-led initiatives for formalising e-waste collection — shifting responsibility from consumers to producers and driving sustainable infrastructure development.
