The Bangladesh Department of Environment (DoE) introduced updated e-waste management rules in 2026 requiring all corporate entities to use certified recyclers for IT asset disposal. Companies must now maintain chain-of-custody documentation and obtain Certificates of Destruction for data-bearing devices, with penalties up to BDT 500,000 for non-compliance.
The Department of Environment under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has significantly tightened e-waste management requirements for Bangladeshi businesses. Effective June 2026, all corporate entities—including banks, garment factories, telecom operators, and government agencies—must engage only DoE-approved certified e-waste recyclers for disposing of electronic equipment.
Key regulatory changes include:
Bangladesh generates approximately 400,000 metric tons of e-waste annually, with only 3% formally recycled. The remaining 97% enters informal channels, causing severe environmental damage to the Buriganga and Turag river ecosystems while exposing companies to data breach risks and regulatory penalties.
